SQL Server 2005 in-place upgrade to 2008

I am doing an in place upgrade for the first time wondering what kind of issues can be faced and what are the things I need to be careful about. Please share your experiences.

The value of backups cannot be enough stressed. In this case bot on Windows
level and of the SQL Server databases.

Personally, I prefer side-by-side upgrades, since keeping the old instance
can be useful if there are unexpected performance regressions.
